GNU/Linux Matters is looking for Python developers for the development of the upcoming multicultural SpreadFirefox.com-like platform to promote freedomware.

The develoment of Animador has begun and we are looking for Python developers who would like to do their bit in their spare time, in order for this web application to be ready sooner as wel as to make it better.

This software is intended to power the multicultural community of people who are going to promote freedom in computing by means of GNU/Linux Matters’ awareness websites, such as Get GNU/Linux. Its main objective is to get everyone involved in the promotion of freedomware, specially those users of freedomware who are not technical and/or don’t have much time to help; we want to provide guidance on how to do their bit, their way.

So, if you are a Python programmer, please take part in this milestone within the freedomware community and consider contributing. We provide an array of tools to make your job as pleasant as possible, and are also willing to deploy more if it is required.

We are really happy to bring GNULinux.cat, the Catalan translation of GetGNULinux.org, into the spotlight again. The website has been thoroughly renewed over the last few weeks.

The list of improvements is long. We can start with the general cosmetics: every bit of the styling has been renovated for a softer, cleaner appearance, in line with the other languages. Many images have been added, several of which localized; and every single page now reflects the countless text changes that have been brought to the English website over the last year. Most of the credit here goes to Oriol Piera for his patient work and Rafael Carreras for the meticulous proof-reading.

Most importantly, GNULinux.cat is now ran by our on-line translation and website-building services. This means that anyone can contribute by suggesting or improving translated text strings, and the improved site can then be built and published by an admin with just two clicks. No more handling of XHTML code and static text files.

This update of the Catalan site also was the opportunity to bring a series of new screenshots on-line, on all websites. In addition, we have replaced the little flags on top of page by a menu, which allows switching languages easily. The menu avoids associating languages with countries (flags); we undertook extensive testing to make sure it would work in all browsers.

Within days, we will be announcing more exciting things, some of which you might guess with a peek at the translation interface.

We’re a little immoderate about accessibility, and making sure all browsers can render our websites very well is important to us. To this end, we have just improved the legibility and display of the text on GetGNULinux.org and translations.

The contributions come from Simon Pascal Klein, a friendly bézier bender of both hemispheres and freelance designer, who knows these things better than we do.

As a result, we get improved legibility, especially on Windows browsers, a nicer, more coherent hierarchical styling, and a touch of serif that fell into place perfectly. The nitty-gritty of changes can be found in changesets [971], [983] and [984].
