Edit as of June 2008: a much better video recording (2-camera, better sound) has just been released, read below.
I am back from T-DOSE, an annual free software event in the Netherlands, where I gave a talk, Overtaking Proprietary Software Without Writing Code.
The conference went very well, and the audience (probably around 30) seemed to have enjoyed the talk. There is a good summary and explaination in Lxer member Sander Marechal’s coverage of the event.
A recording of the 40-min-talk is available as a .mov file1 , and the slides are available as pdf and odt (9 MB each). They are all released under a CC-BY-SA license.
The trip was worthwhile in every aspect. I discovered very interesting people and projects, and in particular the LogiLogi Foundation whose representative Wybo Wiersma made a thoroughly interesting talk on software freedom issues on the internet. The rise of proprietary web 2.0 services, or “the disappearance of the Operating System” as I called it in my presentation, is a major issue for the future of free software.
Now it’s already time to prepare the trip to Krefeld, Germany, where I will give the same talk in German as the keynote of Ubucon. Curious free software enthusiasts, wealthy donors and potential sponsors of all horizons are of course all encouraged to come ;-)
Olivier.
- This file, 220MB, comes from CityTV’s two-camera recording, and has been published in May 2008. The only recording available initially was a self-taped Ogg Theora video (140 MB). [↩]

I just took the time to watch your talk and I pretty much like it and agree.
You really brought up some good points, and I think that you, as a non-programmer, and basically as a non-IT-guy, are the right person to do that.
It’ll sound funny if a kernel-hacker would talk about things like “quality doesn’t matter” and such stuff.
I hope you’ll rock Krefeld. By the way, my (former) hometown Duisburg is right to the east/north-east to Krefeld. If I’d still be in Germany I’d surely be there.
I just watched the slides and the video and I must say this was an awesome presentation with a number of very good points. It is also quite motivational. :) Truly a great job!
Hey, I’m glad to know that it was a success! It was a great presentation. Congratulations!
Thanks for all the enthusiasm!
(I’m a bit late replying to all this;-)
